Reverse Engineering Challenge Empty Reverse Engineering Challenge

Post by Chorduroy on Tue May 19, 2015 10:34 am

Hi all,

Has anyone been trying the REC on Flickr led by Eldeeem?  I didn't start in time to submit my solutions for the official contest, but I've done the first three challenges and been successful so far.  Each one has taken about an hour or two.  One of the challenge builds was even submitted by our own Whateverley!  It really stretches your knowledge of connections and it's lots of fun!

Try not to look at the solutions before trying these builds!

These are the ones I was able to figure out so far:

The first one is the hardest of the three for sure. The third one by Legohaulic was actually the easiest one - maybe took me 20 minutes. Interestingly enough, I did it totally different than he had, and yet my solution was just as effective. I love going through other people's solutions after I get it and deciding if mine was elegant or kludgy. I really wish I would have started right off the bat so I could enter the contest.

You should totally keep trying! I can't help but think that this is going to improve my building in the future!

I'm going to post my solutions here, since I missed the deadline for the contest anyway.  These are ones that I haven't looked at anyone else's for hints until after I finish it.

This one was really tough for me.  When I finally figured out the part I needed to use, it became very obvious.  After I got it, I looked at the solutions that others came up with and noted that they all used a method I had tried but didn't think actually worked because the connection was so tenuous.  I wondered if I was using the wrong parts!  Anyway, click the spoiler link for my solution.

Well I've completed another one.  This was more difficult than it should have been, and my solution certainly isn't as elegant as I would hope, but here it is anyway:

Here it is put together:

Okay!  I'm back!

I had time to work on a couple of the challenge builds last night - Week 5 Follow up A and B.  Unfortunately, I saw the solutions for Follow up C and D before I decided to start working on these, so I won't be posting those.

Week 5 A:  This one was the trickier of the two, just because you need to have the "button" sticking out half a plate (4 LDU) on only one side.  Once I tried the LOTR ring, it was very easy from there.  As always, click the spoiler link for my solution.

Week 5 Follow up B: This was probably the easiest challenge so far.  The button needed to stick out 4 LDU on both sides, and the minifig base had to be studs out both top and bottom.  Using the brick with a stud on two sides was the first thing I tried and bingo.

On the weekend, I tried really hard to figure out the week 6 challenge (not sure why I tried week 6 before week 5, but whatevs).  I just couldn't figure it out.  I finally broke down and looked at people's solutions.  I knew it was a friction only assembly, but none of my solutions worked.  Even when I followed exactly what other people had done, I couldn't get it to stay together.  That was a really hard one.

Haven't had much time to keep up with these lately, but I did do the week 9 follow up challenge ... took me about 25 minutes of trial and error.

The 2 x 4 plates and tiles were very easy to arrange in that configuration, but getting the right offset to attach the 4 x 4 plates to the top and bottom definitely took a while!  Fun one.
