Lego unveiling at the Winnipeg Art Gallery
WAG Celebrates Launch of LEGO® Viewports
Winnipeg, Manitoba, June 10, 2015: Everything is awesome, even Greco-Roman antiquities! The Winnipeg Art Gallery is hosting a special Kids’ Launch to celebrate the unveiling of the LEGO viewports found within the Olympus: The Greco-Roman Collections of Berlin exhibition. This fun-filled afternoon takes place on Sunday, June 21, 1:30-4pm, and features hands-on activities for families and youth. The best part? It’s free for kids under 12!
Explore the galleries and find incredible LEGO replicas of an ancient Greek theatre, a chariot race, a Roman villa, and the Parthenon, all built by the Manitoba LEGO Users Group. Practice your building skills in a “brickstorming” workshop and enjoy LEGO-inspired movies in the Muriel Richardson Auditorium. Meet talented members of the Manitoba LEGO Users Group and view displays of their past and present work.
“The LEGO viewports provide an excellent opportunity for children to learn and engage with the WAG’s Olympus exhibition in a really accessible way,” comments Rachel Baerg, WAG Head of Education. “It was so much fun working with the Manitoba LEGO Users Group to build these amazing brick creations. We built them for kids, but people of all ages will be wowed by them!”
Founded in 2011, the Manitoba LEGO Users Group includes members from across the province. It is one of many LUGs (LEGO User Groups) that exist around the world.
“The Manitoba Lego Users Group feels privileged to be part of the Olympus display at the WAG,” say group members Billy Martens, Chris Abrams, Kevin Lariviere, Kristen Klassen, and Melinda Abrams. “Not only is this our first time in a gallery setting, but our works of LEGO will be housed in the same space as handcrafted antiquities that are magnificent and date back centuries. It is an honour to have our work amongst the work of master artisans.”
The viewports are part of the Olympus: The Greco-Roman Collections of Berlin exhibition, a striking showcase of statuary, ceramics, and artifacts dating from the seventh century BC to the second century AD. Come face to face with ancient treasures from one of the most important collections in the world, rarely seen in North America. Olympus is Manitoba’s first major exhibition of classical antiquities in over half a century. Learn about Greek mythology and prepare for a captivating encounter with Zeus and his fellow gods and goddesses, including Venus, Apollo, and Athena. The exhibition is on view all summer.
Children under 12 are FREE. Surcharge admission applies to all other attendees.
